Cheat with Delia!

I had my first sighting of the new ‘Cheat at cooking with Delia’ book by Delia Smith today.

Yes, that’s right, someone I encounter in my daily life has actually parted with her hard-earned (and oh boy it truly is hard-earned!) cash to own a book with a rather blunt picture of just a shopping basket on the wipe-clean front cover (no more romance for Delia). Perhaps, as the book is aimed at working mothers, it’s so they can wipe the baby sick away in one fell swoop.

Perhaps this new even more eager and desperate audience is messier than demographics she’s aimed for in the past, previously maybe nice neat twenty-something girls who have far too much time on their hands to make proper chocolate cake (tut tut!). And when I say proper chocolate cake I mean melt-in-the-mouth fudgy cake made properly. I suppose I’d better get on and make a couple of these, as it seems when I settle down and have children I’ll be frantically pulling some mash out of the freezer (decorated with alphabet magnets and handprints that now pass for art) and throwing it hastily into the bowl hoping my kids friend’s parents won’t notice that the cake they’re eating at a dinner party contains ingredients that should have been on their plate for the first course instead.

What a waste of hard-earned cash. Although I did buy her vegetarian collection…

One has to wonder - are the people who are likely to want/need a book on "cheating at cooking" likely to be the kind of people who go out to buy books on cooking . . .?
